On February 14, Peter Lander (a Westfield Court neighbor) and SL Board President Jim Kelley incorporated the nonprofit Marott Island Community Association (MICA). The primary driver for creating MICA was to create means for Island residents to work together on land use, development, and environmental issues.
Incorporating MICA allowed it to be registered with the City-County Planning System, thereby providing the Island a more formal presence with city agencies, including the Metropolitan Development Commission (MDC), and with other community groups, such as the Nora-Northside Community Council (NCC)and the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA). MICA’s founding officers are Peter Lander (President), Jim Kelley (Secretary), and Lindsay Scott, CEO, Kids Voices Indy (Vice President). One holdup in founding this community association was the lack of a name for the Island.
Once the advantages of incorporating became apparent, a number of residents of Spirit Lake, Winston Island Woods and Westfield Court were consulted about potential names. A short list was quickly reduced to one—Marott Island. Susie Dawson (B8) provided research on the name Marott. She and Hamid Kashani (B1) provided rationales for selecting that name. Hamid locked down internet domains.
Just because the name “Marott Island” appears in a registration with the city does not mean that the Island has that name. However, with consistent use and long-term persuasion, this name might stick. With this in mind, please refer to Marott Island in your writing and speaking at every opportunity. We all live on Marott Island
